Adventure: Guffey Manor

This adventure is almost as old as the ghost story it's based on. It's one of my earliest adventures ever, let alone paranormal investigations. Yep, this one's a good old fashioned ghost hunt with Ternous and Burns.

Long ago, Burns and I caught wind of  your classic abandoned haunted house. According to legend, the old farmhouse of the Guffey family was inhabited by an elderly couple in the early 1900's. When the old man fell horribly ill, his loving wife attempted to nurse him back to health. She tended to him for days in the big master bedroom upstairs until she came in to find that he had passed on. Distraught over her loss and that she had missed his final moments, she cried at the bedside until she too passed on. Being that the house was so isolated, quite some time passed before the bodies were even discovered and buried in the nearby family plot. Although other residents would move in briefly, they all claimed that those past two residents had never left, lamenting their lonely end in that big old master bedroom upstairs.

Brave (drunk?) teens from the area had been attempting nighttime explorations of the house as it now sits in ruins, completely overgrown and caving in. Yet any that made even past the old graveyard could make it no further than the downstairs. Apparently anyone approaching the stairway would be scared off by noises from above; in particular, the sound of a door shutting. Oddly, it seemed that all the doors had been removed at some point. So what the fuck wer ethey hearing up there? It was enough to send them all running.

But would it be enough to spook the heroes of Team Crash? Find out after the jump by clicking Read More!

Fair warning: I really sucked at taking pictures back in the day. Not to mention I deleted all but just a few so work with me here.

On a cool October night, Ternous, Burns, and I grabbed a few flashlights and headed to Guffey Manor, now isolated in the woods. First though we would have to pass through the old graveyard on the way through the trees.

The woods got denser and darker as we moved through the narrow paths but we soon passed an old shed which was probably a good sign we had made any wrong turns. w00t. Suddenly we emerged out of the brush to see the hulking remains of Guffey Manor arising from the misty fog, lit only by a clouded moon. I must admit I was actually taken aback a bit by what was a fairly imposing sight.

We found an open door to make our way in... too bad it was the back door. Now we would have to move through the entire first floor to find the staircase. But honestly, I was a lot more afraid of falling through the floor into the basement than I was of any ghosts. It was actually a pretty cool house despite being trashed... a lot of fire places too.

We made it back around to the front of the house from the inside where we were able to take the stairs up to the bedrooms. Those rickety old steps creaked with every step and a few wobbled a bit, but me and Burns pushed on, initially taking them a bit further to take a peak into the attic. Didn't stay up there long though since that floor was about to give way any second. Holy shit I looked young.

Back on the second floor, we were presented with doors 1, 2, and 3. One would be the master bedroom. We were already a step ahead of prior adventurers: everyone else supposedly got scared off before going up the steps. But me and Burns were goddamn determined. Our first check was a bust but then we went right on in to the master bedroom.

There's no more pictures. People who have heard me tell this story know why. Burns and I were completely unphased by our surroundings so we decided to snag a souvenir from there to properly brag about our conquest later. As we attempted to cut a piece of the rug from the master bedroom to take back, a door inside the room began to open on its own. We both froze for a moment before sprinting down the steps, rejoining with Ternous, and leaving the house.

Are there legit reasons why that door could have shut? Absolutely. But at that moment we were not fucking going to think about them.

Tally-ho!
